nightclub fire in Brazil kills as many as 200 people

A terrified reveller has described the moment she ran for her life as flames engulfed a Brazil nightclub killing at least 200 people. Student Luana Silva was with her sister at the nightspot when they noticed smoke coming from the ceiling. The 23-year-old told Globo News: "We looked at the ceiling above the stage and it was starting to smoke. It was a friend who showed us. That's when my sister pulled me and we ran." It's believed that at least 100 others were injured in the fire at the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria. Local media say there were as many as 2,000 people in the club when the blaze began following a pyrotechnics show. Police said that the victims had died from smoke inhalation or been trampled to death as terrified revellers ran for their lives as the flames engulfed the club.
